- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999Regulation 3 requires a suitable and sufficient assessment of risks. Employers with five or more employees must record the significant findings.

Who can carry out a fire risk assessment?
The responsible person, usually the employer, owner or managing agent, must make sure a suitable fire risk assessment is carried out by a competent person. For a small, simple premises this can be you, if you have enough training and experience. For larger or complex buildings, a professional fire risk assessor is usually needed.
Will this course make me a professional fire risk assessor?
No. This course gives you the knowledge to carry out and review fire risk assessments for your own workplace and to work with professional assessors. To offer fire risk assessments to other organisations, you would normally need a regulated Level 3 or Level 4 fire risk assessment qualification and registration with a recognised professional body.
How often should a fire risk assessment be reviewed?
The law requires regular review rather than a fixed interval. Review it whenever there is a significant change to the building, its use or the people in it, and after any fire or near miss. Many organisations review it at least once a year.
Do I have to write the fire risk assessment down?
Yes, in England and Wales. Since 1 October 2023, every responsible person must record the full fire risk assessment in writing, including the name of the person or organisation who carried it out.

What is PAS 79?
PAS 79 is a British Standards Institution specification for carrying out and recording fire risk assessments. PAS 79-1 covers non-domestic premises and PAS 79-2 covers housing. Many professional assessors follow it.
How long does the course take?
Most learners finish in about four weeks, studying 3 to 4 hours a week. You have six months of access and can start any day.

Do I need any experience before I start?
No. Some health and safety knowledge helps, but the course is written for managers, supervisors and facilities staff at any level.

What are the pass mark and attempt limits?
You must achieve at least 70% in each assessment. You have up to five attempts per assessment, including your first attempt.
