Glossary / Manual handling

Manual handling

Manual handling means transporting or supporting loads by hand or bodily force.

In plain English

Manual handling includes lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load by hand or bodily force. Injuries often involve the back, shoulders and other joints.

Risk factors

Load weight and shape, how often you repeat the task, awkward postures, poor grip, environmental constraints and individual capacity all matter.

Safer approach

Avoid unnecessary handling where you can, use aids, plan the route, keep loads close to the body, and speak up when a task needs two people or different equipment.
