PPE
PPE is equipment worn to reduce exposure to hazards when other controls are not enough alone.
In plain English
Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes items such as gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators and safety footwear. It protects the wearer; it does not remove the hazard from the workplace.
Last line of defence
Good practice prefers eliminating or controlling hazards at source. PPE supports those controls—it should not be the only measure when better options exist.
Fit and maintenance
PPE only works if it fits, is suitable for the hazard, is worn correctly and is maintained or replaced when damaged.
